A Close Encounter…Test Driving the Pumi

We’ve gotten visitors yesterday to check out the pups and get a closer look at “The Pumi” in his natural environment. Sandy Mainardi and Judy Hoffman drove up to us bringing along some long awaited sunshine that certainly turned up the good mood on the farm.

Sandy is showing some tricks to the very excited and willing Pumi participants…

The adult dogs put up their best behaviors hoping to get some extra attention (the forever opportunist…) They waited patiently (Pumi patience…) until Sandy and Judy checked out the pups and when the spot light has turned on them they were ready.

We hiked up to their new playground, the agility field that we set up last week. The five Pumis quickly get comfortable with Sandy and Judy’s relaxed, playful and exciting dog handling methods.

Anka seemed enjoying the agility training as she did not have to worry about some “madsheep” in the roundpan.

Anka got some extra attention from Sandy, using her expert skills to find people’s soft spots (which was not easy with Sandy because she is in a pretty good shape.)

After we walked back down to the house, all four of us were happily eating our hard earned lunch (thanks to Laszlo) closely monitored by five adult and seven puppy Pumis from underneath the dining table.

The Seven Apostles…

OMG this outside thing is so stressing…

Hey, the pups have been outside the first time. Sunshine, 50 some F temperature, a bit of wind, but not too bad for 15-20 minutes or so. We climbed the hill, just above the house. It is not exactly Mount Calvary, but for the pups it was dramatic enough. To be more comfortable, we took two of the stuffed bunnies outside with them, (No they were not Dismas and Gesmas…)

Heelp! what happened to the walls and the ceiling…?

Although, the pups were a bit overwhelmed by the infinity of space after the confinement of the puppy pan, the presence of Mama Fruska soon pacified them.

It is 6 PM now and the sun is slowly sinking behind the hills, forming a glowing crown on the perimeter of its core. It is a quiet and somber day and the Seven Apostles are sleeping inside after their dramatic journey.

What…? There have been more than seven Apostles…? Well, sorry but in my opinion, seven Pumis should be loud enough to spread the gospel…

As every party, this one has also started out well mannered…

While playing with the pups, the Baz Luhrmann version of “The Great Gatsby” came on television at one point. It is a fascinating movie with a spectacular set design, and choreography.

As we were feeding the dogs again with solid food and watching the decadent party scenes of the movie, I could not ignore the odd similarities between the deep pleasure of the dogs devouring their dinner by rolling and walking in the soft texture of their food and the lustful atmosphere of the hedonistic parties depicted in the movie.

Surprise, Excitement And One Scary Moment…

We walked in the barn this morning and surprise… there was a new born lamb waiting for us in the middle. She’s been two months late. Where have you been little one?

On the other hand, life is right on schedule in the Catskill Pumi world. The pups are growing, wrestling and today they have passed another major exciting mile stone. They had their first solid meal today. They cleaned spotless their flying saucer shaped food bowl…

Than the big scary moment came. While cuddling with the pups after their big meal, we have discovered a sinister tick on one of the pups that have immediately been removed intact.

“Ixodes scapularis”, deer ticks are already here early in the season.

The day is over the temperature is down in the 20F-s and it is snowing for a change.

The pups’s eyes are open, they are strong and their movements are slowly becoming more coordinated. It also appears that they don’t shy away from getting a bit physical when it comes down to getting first to their favorite nipples to nurse – and these pups mean business. The Boys Singing During Happy Hours

So you saw the Catskill Pumi girls napping in the Keukenhof yesterday. While they were enjoying the tulips and the sunshine, the boys sneaked into a dutch pub and stole the moment by singing Franz Lehar’s “Vagyom Egy No Utan” (Dein ist mein ganzes Herz) song during the happy hour.

What else would some Hungarian Pumis sing after a few beers anyway…

BUSTED…!

It is Sunday morning and we slept longer a bit, got up at 7:30 AM instead of the usual 6AM. After letting the dogs out, went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for the dogs. Fruska was so inpatient (and hungry of course) that she did not wait until I could finish preparing her breakfast and has decided to get the breakfast of her own.

See what can happen if you do not feed your lactating hungry Pumi on time.

Yellow pup’s eyes are open! It went something like this; he looked around, dropped his jaw, went back to his litter mates, and had a short conversation with one of his brothers.

“What did you see?” “Y ou do not want to know, it is scarry..”

Red Pumi: “What did you see?”

Yellow Pumi: “You do not want to know…”

Red Pumi: “Oh c’mon…”

Yellow Pumi: “Ok, but it is scarry…”

Red Pumi: “that is fine, tell me!,”

Yellow Pumi: “so I looked around and I saw a bunch of fat Pumis…”

Red Pumi: “OMG that is scarry!”

Yellow Pumi: “I told you…”

Some other crazy rumors are going around between the pups, like black elephant sighting. I guess, yellow pup can say whatever he wants because no one else can see it…
