Uncle Remus - unrelated to the unreal Wolf kids story

Uncle Remus – unrelated to the unreal Wolf kids story

Some background info for my Italian trip…

According to the legend, it started with the wolf kids, Romulus and Remus.  Romulus established Rome and Remus did not come to America to become Uncle Remus, a fictional character telling folk tales in post- reconstruction era America. He was killed by Romulus.  In fact, the wolf story has never been true.  Rome had a

The three tribes were the Ramnes, Tities and Luceres.  If you wake me up in the middle of the night and ask me to recite the names of these tribes, I would not know  them, even though, I’ve learned them in school millions of times. I had to look them up for the blog.

We all learned the great Roman stories. in school, from books and from the silver screen.  Hollywood has kept delivering the big budget epic dramas, Ben Hur, Quo Vadis, Cleopatra and the others with tons of buttery popcorn.  Hate to break the truth for younger audiences however, Marc Anthony did not play Mark Antony and therefore,  Jennifer Lopez was never Cleopatra in the 1963 movie directed by Joseph Mankiewicz.

When we go to Italy, we want to hear the great stories again and again retold by a tour guide with a charming Italian accent, even though, we do not understand half of  the guide’s stories because of his accent. I am not going to go through the entire history of Rome you can rent it from Netflix University.

The Swiss Guard’s brother who immigrated to the U.S. When back in Rome to visit, he always tells a lie that he is a Secret Service agent in the U.S….

Italy is a relatively new country, younger than the United States. The country was not fully unified until the Pope was defeated in 1870. In light of this outcome, honestly, I do not really understand the fuss about the Pope’s famous Swiss Guard.

The twentieth Century has kept up the excitement. Among  the many “isms,” Italy has given us the relatively user friendly fascism (the Italian version.)  Did you know that Mothers’ Day is a Fascist invention? In 1933, Mussolini met 93 mothers at the Palazzo Venezia.  He greeted these mothers as heroes of Italy.  These 93 mothers, gave birth to 1300(!) children combined (that is about 13 children each…) as part of the Fascist national policy to revive the Empire and double its population.

Benito Mussolini had a Macho image. The lion tamer, great swimmer, horseback rider. Could he be Putin's hero?

Benito Mussolini had a Macho image. The lion tamer, great swimmer, horseback rider. Could he be Putin’s hero?

Mussolini also rallied the nation to finance the occupation of Ethiopia in 1936.  On “The Day of the Wedding Rings,” married women were asked to donate their gold wedding rings for the cause of the war.  Thousands of wives gave up their rings to be melted down in support of the war effort.  Ironically, close to a thousand wedding rings were also collected from the United States and sent to the DUCE.  Racist policies did not start until WWII in Italy.  In fact, Mussolini had a jewish mistress for ten years. Fascism was especially unkind to women with regard to such issues as employment, emancipation and independent welfare. Unfortunately, post war and even 21st century Italian politics and policies have problems to fully disconnect from the heritage of pre-WWII women issues and welfare policies. Inequalities of women has been integral part of the cultural DNA and has been woven into the Italian social fabric.

Pope John XXIII He did not come up with the antidote for the antichrist, the antipasto (death by heartburn…)

Italians also had a serious affair with Communism after WWII. Eurocommunism was made  popular in Western Europe by Italy. I remember, Eastern European communist leaders had a hard time to explain back home the phenomenon of church going Italian communist party members during the 1970s.

Khrushchev, the Christmas pen pal of John XXIII

Khrushchev, the Christmas pen pal of John XXIII

In 1963, after decades of fights against Communist ideologies, Pope  John XXIII officially recognized the Italan Communist Party as an organization that mission has been to improve the lives of ordinary Italians including women.  He made his decision against the advice of the Papal administration.  He was dead in two months after his famous Pacem in Terris – go figure…  One of the big sensations was when the Pope exchanged Christmas cards with Nikita Khrushchev after the Cuban Missile Crisis.   John XXIII was also a vital actor in the diffusion of the Cuban Missile Crisis (it turns out that after all it paid off to elect a Catholic president in the US…)

Grandeous chariot crashing scene from proud Roman history

a proud moment, a chariot crashing scene from great Roman history

The 1970-80 have been poisoned by leftist terrorism in the north and violent Maffia activities in the South. The economy still has not opened up for the majority of the women.  Southern men migrated to the North to be part of the industrial boom. Their families and wives have been left behind. This wave of migration created the “white widow” class of southern women who basically lived from the money their husbands send back home from the Northern cities. Economists and sociologists blame the feminization of Italian agriculture in the south due to the lack of men who migrated to the north and its direct consequence the feminization of poverty, on the post-war labor and welfare policies of the Italian state.

In 1987, Hungarian born pornstar, Ilona Staller aka Ciccolina, ex wife of Jeff Koons American artist, has been elected member of the Chamber of Deputies and remained in office until 1992. A MP from an unlikely sector of the economy  to promote women’s rights….

After Ciccolina, politics has never been the same again in Italy. Today, Italy has the largest number of women in parliament in the history of the country. One of the main goals is to reduce violence against women in Italy (one women in every three days becomes victim of violent crimes in Italy) Do they have the will to crack stubborn traditions? Future will tell.

It is hard to write about Italy, anything new or different. It is one of the favorite tourist destinations of many. History, arts, architecture food and wine have been written and rewritten about from various angles by hundreds of gifted writers, historians and food critics .  So what else new can I add and write about that does not make one fall on his face because of repetition and boredom.  I do not know. I’ll be here for eight days and try fatefully report you my Pumi girl, Catskill Apacatancos Anka and my Italian (Milanese)

Ciao Italia!  So we finally got here…! New place and new adventures with one of my great dogs, Anka.  I love to travel, I love to meet new people and immerse myself in the respective local cultures, the  history of the people and the places I visit.

original Chagall wine label. When viticulture gets high(er) brow…

I prefer to explore new places step by step. I never mean to be pushy. ( I call it friendly…)  When I arrived to Milan, it was different.  I skipped the introduction and found myself in the middle of Milanese life.  After all, I have only eight days to spend here.

Luise Ronchi

Luise Ronchi

My strategy is always to establish my perimeters. So first thing, I walked into a wine store/museum that happened to be “Enoteca Ronchi,” the wine sanctuary  of Milan’s oldest five-generation wine merchants, the Ronchis. Being a friendly girl, I started chatting with the person in attendance who turned out to be Luise Ronchi, the current proprietor.  I got a tour of the store, the cellar and was offered some delicate tasting.  Luise has also introduced me to a few wine bar owners in the area who invited me to their establishments for the next few days to come.  What a way to overcome jet lag, start a trip abroad and save on your wine budget…

Now back to my beauty sleep.  I’ll write about Italy later…

The Return (sequel two, part one)

I am pretty concerned about a possible Icelandic Culinary Month celebrated by Finnair. I am not sure if I am ready for a fermented shark fin and pickled herring mousse with sour sheep milk.

Men plan, nature executes…  Based on Kaffogo Agyag’s reproductive cycle in the past two years

, we had a perfect plan until last week. Than everything turned into chaos and upside down as the four bitches have brought into heat each other, including Agyag.  Bitches…

I had to contact Marja-Leena Puranen to double check wether the male dog is available and wether Marja-Leena was ready for us.  Once we had the green light, I had to break the news to Laszlo while we had only a few days left for a massive rescheduling of all plans for the next two weeks and of course to buy a new airplane ticket to Helsinki.

Since we left late from home (as usual), we had a nail biting four-hour drive to the airport in an insane weekend traffic jam.  At check-in, our saga has continued with customer service.  They had no idea about “live animal traveling fee rates” and I ended up paying double ($400!!!)one way – for Agyag.  (What is wrong with weekend customer service…? Once I am back in the States, I have to recoup the money.)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LxaTT8uCV8. <——–Click here

according to

according to the yellow label, Agyag is in the  121lbs category that cost $400 (twice the standard price) each way to transport.  Is it a slightly over weight Pumi or a traveling crate carved of stone?

I waited until Agyag’s crate was conveyed into the belly of the plane then I finally boarded too.  When the plane took off and we were ascending, after all the stress, I could only hope that this was not an Icelandic Culinary Month for all Scandinavian airlines when they serve fermented shark fin, pickled herring mousse and sour sheep milk while someone is out-loud reciting from the Kalevala in Finnish.

My anxiety disappeared in an instance when we reached cruising altitude and  I heard the captain in the loudspeaker, “ladies, gentlemen, it is time to start your cocktails….”

Marja-Leena was waiting for us at the Helsinki Airport. It was so good to see her again.

If you had one too many of the cocktails on the plane, you might freak out that you ended up on planet El-Adrel from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and bumped into a Tamarian when encountering Kim Simmonnsonn's ceramic sculpture in the Art Port at the Helsinki Airport near Gate 37 (Curtesy of Finavia Corporation).

who can take this cold and insane amount of snow anymore. We need to slow climate change…

Rising sea level, punctured ozone layer, melting polar icecap and ocean acidification are among the many symptoms of the accelerating rate of climate change.

It also has an effect on the Catskill Pumis on a personal level. The last couple of years, we’ve had longer, harsher and snowier winters than in the past.  It has been predicted that our area, the Catskill Mountain Park in NY, will be receiving up to fifty per cent more precipitation annually in the next decade.  It is time to weak up folks, climate change has become a reality. a crucial scientific evidence that the Pumis found in identifying the source of long winters and climate change…

While politicians, scientists, corporations and disenfranchised yourselves are up in arms, fighting over the truth and argue over solutions to stop mankind’s demise, the Pumis  has also grown increasingly inpatient in the frigid temperature and deep snow up here in the Catskills.

Environmentalists and economists are arguing over paper towel vs. hand dryer, and try to negotiate slow politically correct solutions, such as changing our behaviors and voluntary emission reduction overtime among other nonsense. In contrast, the Pumis,  have concluded that there is only one creature  to be blamed for these longer and meaner winters, the God Father of climate change, Phil of Punxsutawney, PA, the groundhog…

By using scientific methods, observation, data collection and thinking outside of the box, they deducted that our current winter has intensified due to the irresponsible action of Phil on February 2, 2015.  During their investigations they’ve also found evidence that climate change, long winters and certain bearish tendencies of the stock market are clearly correlated.

Phil is captured in a dramatic action… (classified photo)

Winter has been long and exhausting. The Pumis need to herd, run and play that is nearly impossible to do in the big snow and in often subzero temperature.

The main question has been; can Phil, the groundhog be convinced that he should not go back to his burrow on February 2 anymore  so winter can be shortened and climate change slown in the future?   Finally, the Pumis all agreed that they cannot take the risk anymore; they unanimously said “NO” to dog booties and dog coats… the breed got to the point of no return…

Last we’ve heard from unidentified sources that a Pum anti-vermin task force has been created under the name, “Zero, Bark Dirty”  and have been embarked for Punxutawney, PA…

Pumi Veni, Pumi Vidi, Pumi Vici…

May 31, 2014

Back to Windsor, NY today for the Susque-Nango Kennel Club AKC herding event.  After yesterday’s performance in the AHBA event, I was confident that the girls were going to do well again today.  Both Pumis delivered nice solid work and have earned their qualifying legs toward their PT (Pre Trial Test Title).

Although, both dogs  have fairly extended farm work experience especially Agyag, one has to remember that herding tests and trials are sanitized versions of farm work  where  dog vs. sheep skirmishes, that are normal on the farm, are undesirable in the trial/test arena.  In our case this is especially relevant because our Shetlands are pretty wild bunch of sheep and Agyag is especially appreciative  of any possible physical contact (those of you who saw her in Hortobagy, Hungary, might remember her to give a series of nice work out to the Racka as well as the trainers.)

I am especially proud of Anka who is only ten months old and handles herself very well in the herding arena.  She also got a big applause from the spectators after her run.

It has been a busy two months for us. Fruska’s uneventful pregnancy has resulted in seven beautiful and healthy Pumi puppies and six (plus us) happy families. It has been a rewarding wonderful two months of hard work with a great result.

Some of the new owners have joined us for a “get to know each other” on Saturday.  Richard Long and the Fishers cold not make it because of their previous holiday engagements and will visit us Monday and Tuesday.  Actually we are glad that two of the pups can stay a few days longer so we do not have to quit cold cold turkey and suffering from Pumi puppy withdrawal syndrome.

We cooked we brewed, we fermented we hiked and played until the day ended.  We were one happy family…

We are thankful to all the people who have provided  us feedback, advice, and support to make our B-litter such a great adventure. First and utmost to Csaba Zsiros, breeder of the litter’s sire Penge.

We are  also happy to get to know Sandy Mainardi our “resident agility advisor” and the happy owner of CAVU, one of the lucky B-litter pups who has joined a loving home where he will be put on a lifetime agility challenge.  (Sandy, I think Anka will be happy to see you and working with you again.  By meeting you, our “toolbox” just has become bigger and more versatile…)

Also a big thank you goes to Stacy Lehman, whom we clicked with immediately and felt comfortable to welcome her in our home for the weekend.  She is one of the warmest loving gails who has never stopped entertaining, engaging us and comforting all of our weekend guests.  Stacy took her time  to fly to us from Texas, leaving her family behind during Memorial Day weekend to pick up her future pup, Catskill Bazsajgos Borsika. Stacy, our home (and the cabin…:-)) are always open for you and your family and of course your pooches.

Richard Long, thank you for your patience that you’ve waited for your puppy, Astro, for such a long time. It has been nice seeing you again and also meet your supporting daughter.

Marika and Paul Foreman, thank you for your true friendship and for choosing  Catskill Bikfic of B-Litter as company for Catskill Csibesz of A-litter.

Pups Demonstrate Surprising Skills…

May 14, 2014

The Catskill Pumi B-litter is approaching the finish line.  The pups are scheduled to go to their new homes during Memorial Day Weekend  (be ready for another micro Pumifest reports)

The pups have passed all the newly structured “Ivy league” puppy program  (the ultimate oxymoron statement about the Pumi, the forever peasant dog…) virtually with no difference between them.

This afternoon, we have been surprised by an individual puppy stunt, that we had to retest immediately, to see that other randomly selected member of the litter is capable to reproduce the same behavior.  These puppies rock!

See it yourself…
