WTF…?! (World Trade Fenter…)

February 19, 2016

The four-day long FeHoVa International Winter Show has begun at HUNGEXPO, the Budapest International Exposition site yesterday. The show is becoming a rather peculiar event.

There have been 25 Pumis from 13 kennels and 4 countries yesterday.  The judge was Mrs. Szabo, Katalin Ivanyi.  Kaffogo Agyag placed second in her class with Excellent 2 and Res. CACIB. Well done Agyag!!

Excellent 2 Res. CACIB good job Agyag!

Excellent 2 Res. CACIB good job Agyag!

Before I start to tell today’s bizarre experience in the ring with judge Mr. Istvan Laszlo, Let me congratulate to Nyirsegfia Tuske/Pityke/ BOB and Heczendorfer Jozsef, his owner/handler.

To make the story short, I’ve noticed that Mr. Istvan, the judge, has made some not exactly complimentary statements about a fawn (fako) male Pumi  to the dog’s owner in the ring earlier. He also asked the handler/owner of the same dog that who was the breeder of the dog.  When later we walked into the ring, he also asked me whether Agyag’s breeder was the same person as the fawn Pumi dog’s earlier. I told him that no, my bitch comes from a different kennel.

IMG_4469.JPG Excellent 1

Excellent 1 No CACIB… reason, Bitch in heat! I am pleased with the description but to deny a dog  of CACIB and to advance further because she is in heat, that is kind of…

Judge Istvan overall complimented Agyag and gave her first place in the Class,  “Excellent one, ” however, withheld the CACIB from Agyag by saying, “I cannot give her the CACIB because she is in heat….” (it is on her official written record)  Mr. Istvan Laszlo also did not allow Agyag to advance and enter the ring for the BOB title, even though, she won her class.

I admit, I was unpleasantly surprised. I looked at him, and nonchalantly told him that, how funny this was because three years ago this was not an issue when he, Mr. Istvan Laszlo selected Agyag to be the first Junior Raisits Cup winner in a much larger competition and Agyag, was in heat just like today. He stared at me with wide eyes and open mouth, (I think his tonsils have been removed..)and after a short pause he composed himself again and said, “yes, but she was close to finishing it back than…”

Nyirsegfia Tuske BOB today,

Nyirsegfia Tuske BOB today,

Since we did not have to show again, thanks to the judge, it gave me plenty of time to check the FCI rule book. I copied out the relevant sections for our situation. below is the direct copy of those sections.

4 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS / ADMISSION OF DOGS

…Bitches on heat are allowed to participate subject to the show regulations of the organisers.

7 TITLES, AWARDS AND MAIN RING COMPETITIONS

…CACIB – Certificat d’Aptitude au Championnat International de Beauté de la FCI

The only dogs which can be taken into consideration for the CACIB are those which have been awarded “EXCELLENT 1st”. A CACIB can only be awarded if the dog in question has been assessed as being of superior quality. The CACIB is not automatically and compulsorily linked to the “EXCELLENT 1st”.

So yes, indeed, he has the right to withhold the CACIB, even though, the dog got Excellent 1 and won her class.  The rule book does not give examples of reasons why the judge might withheld the International Certificate.  The unfortunate part is that he also withheld the Res. CACIB from Annika Linden’s dog, Akkinaz Rams who got Excellent 2 and second place.  He won our class and also BOS yesterday.

To be clear, I am not questioning the fact that Mr. Istvan withheld the CACIB because he has the right to do that.  What I do not understand  is, his reasoning, that “the dog was in heat.” He did not say  and wrote that she was not a “superior quality” for the following reasons…(and listing the reasons.) He said that the bitch was in heat and that’s why she cannot get CACIB and go for the BOB.  The rule book clearly says that “…Bitches on heat are allowed to participate subject to the show regulations of the organizers “ based on the information at the time when I checked, there was no stipulations by the organizers that while bitches in heat can enter the conformation show, they cannot earn CACIB and advance for the BOB title (because they are in heat.) I am not sure that when a bitch is in heat what that has to do with her conformation. (I think it is safe to say  Mr.  Istvan Laszlo  would not vote for Hillary Clinton for the same reason… but that one is for another blog…)

This story might finally makes me one of  the “official” whiners and complainers of the Pumi breed, (now internationally too,) but you know what, someone has to stand up and ask the uncomfortable questions for the integrity of the “game” while the rest  of the group hide quietly in the bushes.  By the way, those in the bushes, watch out  for dog poops.

I woke up without my last night’s cold and was ready for action.  This morning we checked out an agility competition and then took the dogs for a last long hike. Just between you and me, by the middle of the week I just called it the “Trail of Tears…”  I have to confess that even though, we take our dogs for daily hikes in the woods on our property upstate NY,  Marja-Leena elevated hiking with her dogs to a different level. I also talked to my sister on the phone, it was such a delight to be in the same time zone with her. We already started making plans for our upcoming fall trip to Hungary and Romania.

I start getting inpatient and somewhat uneasy about tomorrow’s flight for the dog.  All should be just fine… Packed up my stuff and ready to go to bed.  Tomorrow this time I’ll be back home in NY.

City Hopping in Helsinki

The Central Railway Station of Helsinki

The Central Railway Station of Helsinki

We’ve decided that we had enough of the dogs and went to see Helsinki yesterday.  Strolled through part of Kluuvi, the commercial center of the City. It has a shopping center, the University of Helsinki, Movie theaters, museums and the Helsinki Central Railway Station among many other things. One interesting fact that I learned that the Square has two entrances, one for the public and a second one for the President of Finland…

During our city “hopping” we bumped into these vintage beer tanks. During WWI and WWII they probably just installed wheels and tracks on them and they had war tanks  They must have been useful during seize fires (they could brew beer until the fights picked up again…)

We also checked out the exhibitions at the contemporary Art center, “Kiasma.”  After the culture rush,  we escaped to some fine shopping places and checked into some great food stores.  It was such a breath of fresh air to spend some time in cafe houses, fine restaurants and (only…) browsing  ( this is for Laszlo in case he reads this entry) in some high end department store after our local convenient stores and Walmart upstate NY.

The Catskill Pumis and Climate Science

who can take this cold and insane amount of snow anymore. We need to slow climate change…

Rising sea level, punctured ozone layer, melting polar icecap and ocean acidification are among the many symptoms of the accelerating rate of climate change.

It also has an effect on the Catskill Pumis on a personal level. The last couple of years, we’ve had longer, harsher and snowier winters than in the past.  It has been predicted that our area, the Catskill Mountain Park in NY, will be receiving up to fifty per cent more precipitation annually in the next decade.  It is time to weak up folks, climate change has become a reality. We might soon see the days when polar bears knock on our doors and ask us to let them float in our afternoon double bourbons on the rocks to reminisc…

a crucial scientific evidence that the Pumis found in identifying the source of long winters and climate change…

While politicians, scientists, corporations and disenfranchised yourselves are up in arms, fighting over the truth and argue over solutions to stop mankind’s demise, the Pumis  has also grown increasingly inpatient in the frigid temperature and deep snow up here in the Catskills.

Environmentalists and economists are arguing over paper towel vs. hand dryer, and try to negotiate slow politically correct solutions, such as changing our behaviors and voluntary emission reduction overtime among other nonsense. In contrast, the Pumis,  have concluded that there is only one creature  to be blamed for these longer and meaner winters, the God Father of climate change, Phil of Punxsutawney, PA, the groundhog…

By using scientific methods, observation, data collection and thinking outside of the box, they deducted that our current winter has intensified due to the irresponsible action of Phil on February 2, 2015.  During their investigations they’ve also found evidence that climate change, long winters and certain bearish tendencies of the stock market are clearly correlated.

Phil is captured in a dramatic action… (classified photo)

Winter has been long and exhausting. The Pumis need to herd, run and play that is nearly impossible to do in the big snow and in often subzero temperature.

The main question has been; can Phil, the groundhog be convinced that he should not go back to his burrow on February 2 anymore  so winter can be shortened and climate change slown in the future?   Finally, the Pumis all agreed that they cannot take the risk anymore; they unanimously said “NO” to dog booties and dog coats… the breed got to the point of no return…

“Geronimo is down…” (classified photo)

Last we’ve heard from unidentified sources that a Pum anti-vermin task force has been created under the name, “Zero, Bark Dirty”  and have been embarked for Punxutawney, PA…

Disclaimer:  No groundhog has been harmed or mistreated while writing this blog entry – if you ask me…  (however, I am not responsible for the actions of the Pumis…)

Phil…? (the end of climate change or at least this long winter…?)

Koszos, my Electric Light Orchestra bluetooth enabled cat, lit up when he realized that the ten-day long missing Pumis finally are back in his life…

After all, we’ve made it back home. We stopped in New Jersey where we split with Marika. Paul has surprised us with a desperately needed wonderful dinner.

I exchanged all my stuff to to the truck and we were gone back on the road to upstate New York, for three more hours of lonely drive on dark  and icy roads.

Finally we’ve made it back home just after midnight. When the truck finally stopped, the dogs went nuts running and barking into the night. Fruska and Csupasz who did not come along were happy to see their  fellow Pumis to be back.

the Pumi-train is back again on the farm and running on time.

the Pumi-train is back again on the farm and running on time as of this morning.

Of course, all five Pumis slept in the bedroom and hopefully…,… things will start returning to normal today.

Farm, home, snow,  Pumis and happiness.

Thank you again to Marika Foreman, Kathie Ogden, Dianne Fletcher, and my forever crazy Rat Terrier Ladies’, Stacy McWilliams and Jackie Maye Olsen helping us to achieve such a success.

Wish you a happy holiday season!

Sal, we gotta go…

We’ve made good time on the road up north.  Passed through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and stopped in Virginia to spend the night there.  The dogs pretty much slept through the 11 hour-long drive.

We stopped for a stretch, grabbed some food.  In one of the rest areas a Black Vulture stalked  the dogs.  I had to leash them because they wanted to catch the big bird. I wonder why  these southern Oligoceneans ( in Orlando the alligators and here these antiquated birds) are fixated on the Pumis.

what a ghostly rest area just before sundown with that crazy Black Vulture. I had to leash the dogs.

We got to our motel pretty late after a series of closed or “temporarily no credit cards accepted” stations.  Surprise surprise,  our reservation has not come trough, but we were lucky enough to get a room anyway.

This morning back on the road again. Nasty weather around Washington D.C. heavy rain, road constructions and accidents. While Marika was driving during the long bumper to bumper traffic, I came up with my Eukanuba Commemorative Cocktail.

Colors like Pink and Blue are fundamental and it also has to somehow designate some of the states we’ve driven through like peach from Georgia, the Cardinal from Virginia or some moonshine from North Carolina.  Drink it with a palmetto leaf hat on your head from South Carilina. Cheers!

ok replace the cherry with a wedge of pink grapefruit and add the chunk of peach on the read feather. Do n ot forget the ice cubes!

Your Eukanuba Commemorative coctail…ok replace the cherry with a wedge of pink grapefruit and add the chunk of peach on the red feather. Do not forget the ice cubes and the ground nutmeg!

So here is my Eukanuba Commemorative Coctail creation (have not tried it yet.)

2 parts L’Orange Grey Goose Vodka (orange for Florida)

1 part Broadslab Rum (Legal moonshine from North Carolina)

1 part of Blue Curacao (for the Eukanuba blue floor color)

a pinch of ground nutmeg ( for its psychoactive/deliriant effects of myristicin)

one small wedge of pink grapefruit on the bottom of the glass (Eukanuba pink)

a one cubic inch chunk of peach (Georgia)  on a  clean red feather of a Cardinal  (the bird of Virginia) the feather can be fake submerged in the cotail.

served in a wide cocktail glass with two ice cubes.

Enjoy your hangover under your Palmetto hat.

The Palmetto hat I recommend for this coctail. It israther more like a helmet in case you have a bigger sip than you can handle
