Seven Pumis In Seven Days…

May 30, 2015

Hello World, We Are Here

Hello World, We Are Here

Hello World, We Are Here…  We were happy to land on Planet Pumi during Memorial Day weekend, make it sure that everyone will remember us.

FYI, we are more than color coded cute monkeys, we are Pumis with real names… if you think you have speech impediment after reading our names, either ignore it or set up an appointment with your speech pathologist.

So here we go!

Hi, my name is Csucsai Csinszka or Csinszka from Ciucea. I am one of the pups from the Catskill Pumi C-litter.  I will be the narrator of our first seven days today.

Sneaky little guys

Sneaky little guys

My name comes from the romantic story (blah blah blah…) that Csinszka was the wife of one of the greatest Hungarian poets, Endre Ady. Unfortunately, he died of syphilis just before penicillin was available in 1919…  (Sorry, I am a pup and sometimes not sure about appropriate comments or unnecessary extra information…) Anyway, since I started it, let me finish it… As a new born pup, my take away of this story is, that greatness might shields one from the consequences of getting in  to trouble, however, not necessarily from contracting trouble…The wife, Csinszka was from a small town in Transylvania, Ciucea or Csucsai, that is between Oradea where our mistress, Ildiko was born and Cluj Napoca where Ildiko attended her undergraduate studies, so she was riding through Ciucea a lot.

The second girl’s name is “Csendes Csobanka” that translates as “Quiet Shepherdess.” I think this name is self explanatory. We were born into a herding kennel, and while anecdotes say that Pumis must bark when herd, our elder kennel team mates have proven that a good herding dog can work in silence.

“Cseresznyes Cio-Cio-San” is the third girl, that stands for “Cio-Cio-San with Cherries.” This name is a testament that we are from an artsy fartsy family, and supposedly  when Laszlo was growing up, his family had permanent annual ticket to the Budapest Opera House… (I hope you  got the Cherry connection…)

“Cserfes Csacsogo,” or Gossipy Chatterbox” is the fourth girl’s name. I do not want to be a party pooper, so I cannot identify the person she is named after… Pumis are certainly known about their chattery personality and gossip is also an important social tool  getting to know your allies and enemies…

And  here come the boys…

AKC's Most Wanted

AKC’s Most Wanted

“Cifra Csaszar” or “Adorned Emperor.” A name that jumps out from the gilded history of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, folk fables, national operas, Francophile poets and the rest.

“Csipos Csuzli” or “Pinching Slingshot” is the perfect name for the perfect underdog, a peasant underdog I might add, recalling a biblical hero from the Old Testament.

Finally the last of us is “Csatakos Csoma.”  His name can be translated as “Soaked or Muddy Csoma.” Either way, when you’ll see him, you know that he is just an adorable lovely dirty Pumi.

We’ve had a busy loud and camera flashy first seven days, so I think I am happy that I cannot hear and see for a few more days, otherwise, I would have a serious headache.  We were photographed and showed around the world, I felt like a Kardashian Pumi or one of “AKC’s Seven Most Wanted…”

We also had a visit at the vet office that has become a subject of an international crisis, “dewclaw or not to dewclaw…” However, thanks to the twenty four-hour news cycle, FIFA took the center stage right after us.

Lately, we are subjected to some weird experiment, created by a person named Dr.Bataglia.  Honestly, it is quite uncomfortable.  We have to hang upside down, resting on cold surface, they push Q-tips between our paws and other weird stuff. It is supposedly  good for us.  The only thing I am concerned about is that a few decades from now some revisionist historian might come up with the idea that we were part of some weird Eugenist exercise, the “Post-Letterman Stupid Pet Tricks”.

So what will we become? I do not know. Words go around in the whelping box that they will send us to the four corners of the world, so I guess, we will be missionaries. Wait a second…, can we be Mormon Pumis?

One always has to come from somewhere else to authenticate the value of frivolity…

I have been living in the U.S. for close to thirty years and still falling for Route 66, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Greyhound, the world’s largest carrot or cauliflower (made of plastic) installed on roadsides, just outside of small town USA. I also love fake or authentic diners with their orange chairs, or the very idea of a road trip, (one of the most perfect ways to waste one’s time) the possible “poppest” sub-icons and concepts of our vernacular pop culture. Among them, of course, there is the Eukanuba National dog show with its irky color combination of blue and pink.

This is my third year driving down to Orlando Florida. It has become a ritual. Reservations, preparations, packing, the drive, meeting doggie friends and most importantly spending  some carefree quality times with my dogs by escaping from the winter of the Catskill Mountains of NY.

It is also soothing temporarily leaving behind my adopted chronic American nervousness.

There is no price tag but only a very personal sign value on this carefully packaged annual moment.  One gotta love it…

It was a real team effort by Club members and Pumi lovers. Kathie Ogden handled Anka, and Dianne Fletcher volunteered to handle Catskill Becsi Barsony.  These are the moments that is hard to put a price tag on.

After the show, the four of us plus Christine Edwards went out to Miller’s Ale House.

The Yankee Pumis of Charles Towne…

Charleston, the city, the dance and flat chests

Charleston, the city, the dance and flat chests

December 8, 2014

“The 1920s brought not only the Charleston but the flat chest” Well, I guess, I fit right in here…  The quote is from Robert Gottlieb, former editor of the New Yorker. (Why am I not surprised… ) He is forgiven because of his  book, the “Art of the Plastic Handbag 1949-59.” It is every woman’s must read…

After almost 12  long hours on the road, just before midnight, finally we arrived to Charleston, SC. This morning, we went to visit, Susan Smith, who has Catskill Asz, a good looking male from our A-litter. We have not seen Asz since he was about eight weeks old. He smelled and sniffed and looked…it was a remarkable moment when suddenly it clicked in for him. I bet he recognized me.

The Pumi Makeover… Asz watching his alter ego on the grooming table

While I was grooming Asz, the  obnoxious northern Pumis has raided Susan’s house and yard. Almost removed the Christmas tree and made sure that the entire city of Charleston could hear them.  Susan has treated us with a fantastic lunch and we chatted the afternoon away. It was about four a clock when we collected the Pumis from the pool and began the last leg of our trip.

While Marika was driving, I looked up Charleston’s history. It is a quite interesting place. The city has drawn many different races nationalities, ethnic and religious groups. Jews, Germans, French, Irish, Spaniards free blacks, people from the Carribians and of course the English, mingled in Charleston during the colonial era. Interestingly, Catholics were not allowed in the City until after the Revolution.

when are we going?

when are we going?

One crazy fact that caught my eyes, was the early deerskin trade of Charles Towne as the city was called in its early history. In about twenty years in the early 1700s, about a million deers were slaughtered and 5,239,350(!) pounds of deer skin were exported. Considering the high number of vehicle/deer collisions everywhere, I bet, car insurance companies simply call this era “the good ol’ days…”

We arrived to Orlando Florida around 9 pm tonight.  We will be back tomorrow.

Rise and Shine

June 1, 2014

We had an early start this morning.  I got up at 5AM (OK, I admit… Laszlo got me out of bed…) and drove to Windsor the third time with Agyag and Anka this weekend.

After two days of smooth sailing, we’ve entered “ruffer” pastures today.  Although the girls seemed less perky, thanks to the exhausting roundtrip drives, the heat, perhaps Anka’s tender age, (she is only ten months old) and Agyag’s standing heat, both Pumis earned the second and final  qualifying score for their PT (Pre-Trial) Title.

Last year, Kaffogo Agyag with her Junior World Cup Winner of Hungarian Breeds win, Raisits Cup victory, and Hungarian Junior Champion title, (three additional wins) in conformation during the World Dog Show in Hungary, has proven, that yes, she is a beautiful “blonde” (Fako) Pumi.  However, with this three-day weekend of intense herding in Windsor, NY, she has also proven that “dumb blond Jokes” simply don’t apply.

I am proud of you girls!

Living with Pumis is a full time job (we just have to figure out how to get paid…)

We had a busy day today. Ildiko took Kaffogo Agyag and Catskill Apacatancos Anka  to their very first U.S. herding event, to the Susque-Nango Kennel Club.  They entered in the Junior herding dog competition and both dogs qualified with very nice work. Judge Terry Kenny has never seen a Pumi before and he has been so impressed with both of them that after the weekend trials are over, he asked me to work the dogs.  We will be happy to do it and spread the Pumi gospel….(hey who would refuse two free lessons…)

In the same time Laszlo had the privilege to stay home after our busy Memorial Day Weekend. In the afternoon he decided to take Catskill Becsi Barsony to a shopping spree to the village after her excellent performance last night’s puppy agility class in New Jersey.  (below, you can watch Laszlo and Barsony’s adventure at Tractor Supply this afternoon.)

Tomorrow, we will be back to Windsor for an AKC Pre-trial competition with the girls.

Look for our report…

Fishing or Herding… Gotta Make a Decision…

Gillian, Martha and Bob with little Baka before taking him to his new home.

After a quite challenging canoeing adventure of Bob Fisher over the weekend, (Seventy miles from Cooperstown NY to Binghamton NY).  Today, Martha, Bob and their daughter, Gillian Fisher came to pick up Catskill Bocskoros Baka.

Pumis most likely effect climate change… they sure melt your heart…

Since the  Fishers have raised a long line of herding dogs over the years, they did not blink when the little Pumi, Bokas, looked into their eyes.  This really made us comfortable about future checks and balances in the family.

What makes this event even more exciting is, that little Baka will live only 4-5 miles from us in the Village of Delhi, NY.  He will have access to the Delaware river as well as the local forests and fields under the Fishers’ supervision.

The only question left to be answered is, wether it will be fishing or herding, or simply fishing by a herding dog on the Delaware River?

Welcome to your new home little Baka…!

The last guest is leaving…

It has been a busy two months for us. Fruska’s uneventful pregnancy has resulted in seven beautiful and healthy Pumi puppies and six (plus us) happy families. It has been a rewarding wonderful two months of hard work with a great result.

Some of the new owners have joined us for a “get to know each other” on Saturday.  Richard Long and the Fishers cold not make it because of their previous holiday engagements and will visit us Monday and Tuesday.  Actually we are glad that two of the pups can stay a few days longer so we do not have to quit cold cold turkey and suffering from Pumi puppy withdrawal syndrome.

We cooked we brewed, we fermented we hiked and played until the day ended.  We were one happy family…

We are thankful to all the people who have provided  us feedback, advice, and support to make our B-litter such a great adventure. First and utmost to Csaba Zsiros, breeder of the litter’s sire Penge.

We are  also happy to get to know Sandy Mainardi our “resident agility advisor” and the happy owner of CAVU, one of the lucky B-litter pups who has joined a loving home where he will be put on a lifetime agility challenge.  (Sandy, I think Anka will be happy to see you and working with you again.  By meeting you, our “toolbox” just has become bigger and more versatile…)

Also a big thank you goes to Stacy Lehman, whom we clicked with immediately and felt comfortable to welcome her in our home for the weekend.  She is one of the warmest loving gails who has never stopped entertaining, engaging us and comforting all of our weekend guests.  Stacy took her time  to fly to us from Texas, leaving her family behind during Memorial Day weekend to pick up her future pup, Catskill Bazsajgos Borsika. Stacy, our home (and the cabin…:-)) are always open for you and your family and of course your pooches.

Richard Long, thank you for your patience that you’ve waited for your puppy, Astro, for such a long time. It has been nice seeing you again and also meet your supporting daughter.

Marika and Paul Foreman, thank you for your true friendship and for choosing  Catskill Bikfic of B-Litter as company for Catskill Csibesz of A-litter.

Cherie and Charlie Johnson we are delighted that you’ve found us and decided to take Catskill Fitz, and welcome him in your big loving family.

Testing Dogs For Real Life Situations… Or…Things Can Get Mixed Up

May 18, 2014

Where is the well? I wonder who was the genius who built the porch over the well and not marking its location...

Where is the well..?  I wonder who was the genius who built the porch over the well and not marking its location… (Look at the pups in the back ground)

Testing dogs for temperament, shyness, fear, physical aptitude, etc…, nothing new.  All breeders do them or should do them.  Although our guys have been going through our “standardized tests” the past seven weeks, suddenly, yesterday reality hit.

Three days ago our well pump has failed so suddenly we had no water in the house and water for the farm animals.  Making things more complicated, Friday we had a torrential storm that prevented us to start the repair.  Suddenly the conveniencies of civilization such us flushing toilet, washing machine (especially with seven pups in the house) dishwasher have become  dreams far from reality… Our life got put on hold. carrying drinking water from the neighbors house and water for the livestock from the creek bed in the middle of an insane storm.

The jackhammer next to the x-pan...

The jackhammer next to the x-pan…

Saturday Laszlo rented a Jackhammer and started breaking up the surface of the porch to find the well.  In the same time Sandy and Bill Mainardi stopped by to see the pups while on a quick getaway vacation up in the Catskills.

Although Bill currently is dealing with a shopping mall size utility problem, he immediately recognized the severity and magnitude of our situation (who can say no to seven thirsty Pumi pups…) rolled up his sleeves grabbed a shovel and started helping Laszlo, while Ildiko and Sandy was playing with the dogs.  In the heat of the play, the dogs didn’t even move their ears while the jackhammer was running.

It was a great moment and we can happily report that our pups have gotten well prepared  through real life to take their noise test and  they can now skip the noise test that should prepare them for the noises of real life….  Sometimes things get mixed up…

A real gem...Laszlo pulled out the water container from the horse traier so at least we can imitate running water until the pump gets replaced...

Pups Demonstrate Surprising Skills…

May 14, 2014

The Catskill Pumi B-litter is approaching the finish line.  The pups are scheduled to go to their new homes during Memorial Day Weekend  (be ready for another micro Pumifest reports)

The pups have passed all the newly structured “Ivy league” puppy program  (the ultimate oxymoron statement about the Pumi, the forever peasant dog…) virtually with no difference between them.

This afternoon, we have been surprised by an individual puppy stunt, that we had to retest immediately, to see that other randomly selected member of the litter is capable to reproduce the same behavior.  These puppies rock!

See it yourself…
